Part of Cornwall Avenue to be renamed Maltby Court

Amherst is moving to recognize a former deputy mayor and town councillor by naming a street in his honour.

Amherst is considering renaming the southern portion of Cornwall Avenue in honour of longtime deputy mayor and town councillor Roy Maltby. Maltby Court will lead from Park Street Extension into the new school when it opens next September.

AMHERST – Amherst is moving to recognize a former deputy mayor and town councillor by naming a street in his honour.

Town council is expected to consider a staff recommendation at its October meeting on Monday to rename a portion of Cornwall Avenue for Roy Maltby, who died suddenly last week.

Maltby Court will run from Park Street Extension to the new West Highlands Elementary School that is scheduled to open next September.

“With the closing of the middle portion of Cornwall Avenue, the southern portion of the street ust be renamed,” Amherst’s planning director Jason MacDonald told members of town council on Monday. “Our current street naming policy gives the development officer authority for naming of streets within the town. Basically, the development authority is to pick a name from the approved list of street names.”

MacDonald said the list of names has not been updated since 2002. He is recommending the name Maltby be added to the list and that the town rename the street in his honour.

“Should council add Maltby to the list of approved street names, the development officer will be renaming the southern end of Cornwall Avenue Maltby Court,” MacDonald said. “This is especially fitting as Maltby Court will provide the primary access to the new school and Mr. Maltby dedicated an immense amount of his time to the youth of this area through minor hockey and baseball.”

Maltby, who was active in the First Baptist Church, minor hockey and junior hockey, served on town council from 1994 to 2004.

Maltby’s son, Stephen, said Tuesday his family is pleased with the town’s plans.

“My dad went to West Highlands School as well as  his two brothers, Edward and Walter, and all of them had fond memories of going to school there and growing up on Park Street,” Maltby said in an email. “Dad would be so pleased and humbled by the town’s plans and we thank them very much for their kind action. People in this community have been so supportive of our family this past week and this is just another example of what a great place Amherst is to live.”
