First annual MADD Rally Held

Tom Wood (Amherst Police), Steve Rayworth (RCMP), Norma Jean Watts, Shelley Pettigrew (both of MADD Canada) and Ray Bristol (RCMP) pose for a picture Saturday at the Amherst Lions Club, headquarters of the first annual MADD Rally to raise awareness for impaired and distracted driving.

AMHERST-The Bordertown chapter of MADD Canada teamed up with local police forces and businesses to raise awareness about drunk driving on Saturday.

“It’s going well,” stated Const. Travise Dow of the Cumberland RCMP. “We’ve had 35 people already signed up, with a couple new ones indicating they would come,” he added. “We really hope more people come to this first time event.”

There was much more to MADD Rally Day than just the several hour drive that participants took part in. The Cumberland Wolfpack Football team held a barbecue on site at the Amherst Lions Club where music and a silent auction also took place.

While raising awareness about drunk driving was the underlying goal of the first annual event, one poster on display was geared at deterring texting while driving.

The KIA poster, designed like an eye doctor’s office chart, read “The problem with texting and driving is that you don’t see the dangers until you run into them.”

Other MADD displays included photos of two young adults (Raymond Gilroy and Meaghan Patterson) who were killed in 2003 as a result of drunk driving accidents.

“It’s going to be a super, fun-filled day,” stated Louise Stillman with the Amherst Bordertown chapter of MADD Canada on Saturday. “Thanks for the support.”

“Anytime that you can raise awareness for MADD Canada, it’s a good thing,” stated Constable Tom Wood with Crime Prevention unit of the Amherst Police.

Atlantic KIA, Amherst Toyota, Hatheway Ford and Scotia Hyundai were among the corporate sponsors who donated trophies to winning rally teams on Saturday.

“I’d like to thank our sponsors,” stated Dowe. “Our partners are the Amherst Fire Department, Amherst Police, Springhill Police, DNR and minor football,” he added. “Most of all, I’d like to thank the Amherst  Lions Club for hosting the event, allowing us to use it as our (MADD) rally headquarters,” he added.
