AMHERST – An evening with the four Fathers of Confederation is returning.

The Cumberland County Museum is hosting its annual fall fundraiser on Sept. 28 at the Amherst Lions Club with a roast beef supper, entertainment and appearances by Amherst’s four fathers – R.B. Dickey, E.B. Chandler, Jonathan McCully and Sir Charles Tupper.

“This is one of our most important fundraisers and should bring in about $3,000 to $4,000,” museum board chairman Brian Trenholm said. “Proceeds from the event will go to the operation of the museum.”

Trenholm said the four Fathers of Confederation fundraiser was a popular attraction years ago before being brought back by the museum about five years ago.

Along with the supper, participants will be entertained by The Fellas and hear actors portray the town’s contributors to Confederation.

“Five years ago I wrote a play for the dinner on the four fathers. We’ll be doing excerpts from the play with each of the four giving a political speech about why Nova Scotia should join Canada. They’ll be talking about their vision for this new country called Canada,” playwright Dale Fawthrop said.

Joining Fawthrop in portraying the Fathers of Confederation will be Jim MacDonald, Frank Allen and Terry Farrell.

Trenholm said it’s up to the museum to raise as much as $20,000 from fundraising and individual donations. Other fundraisers include the sweet tray sale, various teas, the multi-ethnic dinner and the plant sale it does in conjunction with the museum’s garden committee.

Tickets are $35 each and can be purchased at the museum or by calling 667-2561. There’s a $15 tax credit for each ticket purchased.
