HALIFAX - City staffers can go ahead with the design and construction of a new transit terminal on Lacewood Drive, now that council has approved the location.

Councillors voted unanimously Tuesday in favour of the recommended site, behind the Canada Games Centre.

“This terminal’s been a long-awaited decision…I’m pleased to put it forward, we do need it,” said Coun. Russell Walker.

The terminal was originally approved for a location on Willett Street, which didn’t sit well with local residents.

On the new location, Metro Transit director Eddie Robar said the new terminal will be able to handle 12 buses at one time, which will allow significant improvements to local service.

“As it stands, the facility that we’re using is really just a street station and it has no expandable capacity whatsoever,” he said.

A public session on design of the new terminal is expected to be held in early fall.
