AMHERST - Skaters will soon be getting some air and pulling some tricks at a park dedicated for them.

Amherst's first skate park, sponsored by the Amherst Lions Club, is nearing completion with an opening date expected by mid-May and an official opening later in the month.

"It's coming together nicely. The weather didn't help us during the winter, but it has been going great the last week or so and we're getting pretty close to being done," Steven Hare of NewLine Skate Parks said Wednesday.

Construction of the 10,000-square-foot facility began last October and will cost just under $370,000. Part of the park was completed before January when heavy snow forced work to halt until March.

The park will feature a mini-bowl, rails of various heights and shapes, walls, banks, ledges, ramps, stairs, benches and green islands.

Hare said a lot of planning has gone into the park, adding area skaters were instrumental in helping develop a concept for the facility. He sees the park attracting skaters and bikers from both Cumberland and Westmorland counties.

Congratulations Amherst. This has been a long time coming and I know past, present, and future skaters and bikers are thrilled with this facility. I represent the past demographic and I might even break out the ol' skate to give the park a rip!
