ST. JOHN’S, N.L. — Mayors from Newfoundland and Labrador are heading to Halifax today for the Atlantic Mayors’ Congress.

The event will bring together mayors from all four provinces to discuss a number of issues affecting municipalities in the region.

Woody French of Conception Bay South says one of the biggest items on the agenda is the new wastewater guidelines announced in February by federal Environment Minister Jim Prentice.

French says they could end up costing municipalities upwards of $1 billion.

He says Ottawa has no funding mechanism in place and there are fears the costs could be downloaded.

French says other items up for discussion include economic development, immigration, ferry service and roadway lighting.
