SACKVILLE – The Catbird Jazz Society and the department of music at Mount Allison University are pleased to present a concert by Myriad 3, an innovative and exciting jazz piano trio from Toronto.

The concert, to be held at the Owens Arts Gallery on the Mount Allison University campus in Sackville on Wednesday, March 12, begins at 8 p.m.

Anyone coming early can peruse the complete collection of Alex Colville serigraph prints at the Owens, in its last current week of being exhibited there,  before sitting back and getting a little Soulville with their Colville.

Myriad 3 consists of Chris Donnelly on piano, Dan Fortin on bass, and Ernesto Cervini on drums.

The group has been likened by some critics to the well-established American and Swedish genre-jumping groups, Bad Plus and EST, but without the sampling or techno effects. Like those other sonicallyadventurous groups, Myriad 3 take an arresting and engaging approach to thevarious pieces found on their debut album, Tell.

They have a lean, rhythmic, and self-assured style, mixing classical, pop, and jazz elements into their numbers. All but one of the pieces on the album are originals written by one or another of the band members.

The exception is afascinating take on Oscar Peterson’s Night Train rendition of Duke Ellington’s “C Jam Blues”: listening to the Myriad 3 version of this classic is somewhat like hearing a cassette tape of Oscar playing the piece, if the tape deck mechanism were a bit wonky.

Myriad 3 are also conducting a clinic with the Mount Allison Jazz Ensemble the night before the concert.
