The Book Review: Maritime Fresh: Delectable recipes for preparing, preserving and celebrating local produce. By Elisabeth Bailey. Photography by Kelly Neil (Halifax: Nimbus Publishing, 2013), $27.95, 234 pages.

Food and garden writer Elisabeth Bailey (Taste of the Maritimes: Local, Seasonal Recipes the Whole Year Round) teamed up with photographer and food stylist Kelly Neil to create Maritime Fresh: Delectable recipes for preparing, preserving and celebrating local produce, a one-of-a-kind recipe book and grower’s guide that is jam-packed with information.

Bailey includes no fewer than 120 mouth-watering recipes in this timely recipe book and growing guide that is becoming increasingly relevant as more and more people are looking to buy local or grow their own food.

Following an introduction the instructs the reader how to gather, preserve, grow, freeze and dry their own produce, no fewer than 33 core fruits and vegetables and associated recipes are provided: apples, asparagus, beans, beets, berries, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, carrots, cauliflower, celery, corn, cucumber, eggplant, garlic, greens, herbs, leeks, lettuce, mushrooms, onions, parsnips, pears, peas, peppers, plums, potatoes, radishes, rhubarb, summer squash, tomatoes, turnips and rutabagas, winter squash, notwithstanding some assorted produce.

Accompanying Bailey’s 120 recipes are full-colour photographs taken by Neil that capture crops from the pre-harvest through to cooked stages.

Information about shopping at farmers’ markets, community-supported agriculture (CSA) and U-picks are also provided by Bailey in the book.

Finally, the book contains two informative appendices: seasonal availability by produce type and local produce sources in the Maritimes.

Maritime Fresh will allow you to plan and prepare for the upcoming growing seasons as you wait for winter to come to an end. Enjoy!
