Brookdale Notes with Jean Miller

Greetings from Brookdale.

We have had snow and more snow and we are expecting more snow, freezing rain and just plain rain. I can’t remember ever having a winter like this. Times are a-changing.

We bought our Christmas tree this year and dug out decorations that I haven’t seen for years. It was nice and we had my sister, Elizabeth Moore, and her granddaughter Raya Donkin, my brother Lloyd Fraser and Rod’s sister, Mary Carter, for dinner.

We do not have too many more Christmases on our Bucket List so thought we would make this one a little more special. We had phone calls from our three boys and from two of our grandsons. We had a visit by Skype with our grandson Troy, who lives in London, Ont. The whole family was there visiting; our son David and Joan from Colborne, Ont. and Chad and Lee of Peterborough, Ont. Troy and Kyla have two little boys, Evan and Tyson. It was a real treat.

The fourth season of Downtown Abbey is back on Sunday night at 10 p.m. and it is looking like there is a lot of action upstairs and down. I have the first three seasons so am looking forward to the fourth.

Jean and Eldon McCormack had a good family Christmas with their children, Marilyn and Rick Hicks, and Murray and his family. Jean’s mom lives there and so all her other grandchildren were visiting as well as Nick and Shawna and their children, Jackie and Emily from Paradise, N.L. They came by plane but may have to find another way home. The weather there is worse than ours.

Congratulations are extended to Dorothy Jones of Amherst, who celebrated her 100th birthday recently.

Sincere sympathy is extended to Barbara (Read) Estabrooks and family on the death of her husband, Austin Estabrooks, who passed away on Dec. 30, 2013. Two of his stepdaughters, Michelle (David) Chitty and Jill (Steve) Yorke and their families are residents of Brookdale. We had hoped to attend the visitation on Friday afternoon in Sackville but the weather was not fit to travel.

We also had a sad call regarding Jackie Thompson, formerly of Brookdale, who moved to Maine, U.S.A. about two years ago. Jackie died New Year’s Eve surrounded by her family. She had a brain clot and only lived a few hours before she went to be with her Jesus. Jackie was a firm believer and loved everyone and everyone who met or knew Jackie loved her. She was really an “angel” who walked this earth. She was a dear friend of mine and we had a lot of good times together. Jackie loved to sing and sang in many groups and church choirs. She was of the Catholic faith but she sang for various church choirs and she enjoyed that as much as we enjoyed hearing her.

Jackie turned 89 on Oct. 7, 2013 and she and husband Basil were married 65 years on Oct. 2, 2013. She loved and enjoyed her family and was so excited about moving to Orono to live with Marsha and her husband. I met her other daughter Maureen, who lived in Spain, but I did not have the pleasure of meeting her son. She truly loved her children and her grandchildren and her great-grandchildren as well. I shall always hold her in my heart and miss her every day.

I was checking for January birthdays and I found a big one. A big Happy Birthday to the Trenholm triplets of Brookdale: Stuart, Veronica and Sally Ann who will be celebrating their 17th birthday on Jan. 18. One wonders where the time goes. They are wished a happy and healthy year ahead.

Best wishes also to Austin Compton, who celebrates his 16th birthday on Jan. 18. Others celebrating January birthdays are Aaron Conklin, Susan MacKay, Gerald Read, Sara MacLeod, Suzanne Wilkie and Evelyn Hollis.

A good thought to start 2014: Just because the past didn’t turn out like you wanted it to, doesn’t mean the future can’t be better than you can ever imagine.

Something to think about:

God’s New Year wish list;

To your enemy, give forgiveness

To your opponent, great tolerance

To you friend, honor above self

To children, set a good example

To the hurting, offer comfort

To Jesus, your heart.

Have a good week and, remember, schools are now in session so drive with caution. If you have any events, birthdays, travels, etc. to put in the paper, please call me at 667-8107 or email me at Thank you.
