Post office offers cancel stamp contest

SOUTHAMPTON - Happy 2011 Readers! I hope everyone has had a wonderful holiday season. Mine was fabulous, filled with family and friends, food and music. I wouldn't change a thing! I want to thank everyone who helped me celebrate this year, and invite you now to do it again same times, same places, next year.

One of the highlights of my New Year's was running into my friend Janice Bennett at Pizza Delight in Springhill. She was enjoying a New Year's supper with her parents, Elaine and Willis. Janice told me about the Siddall family Christmas potluck held on Dec. 29, 2010 at the Southampton Community Center. Forty-seven family members came to share food and fellowship. What a great time that would have been.

I would like to extend my most sincere condolences to the family of Thora Meldrum, who passed away on Dec. 19, 2010 and also to the family of Donna Mosher, who passed away on Dec. 27, 2010. These special ladies will be missed in our community.

Birthday greetings are extended to past and present Southampton residents Tim Dickinson, Barb Smith, Jackie Bradbury, George Spence, January Brown, and Eryn Siddall. I hope you all were fortunate enough to celebrate your special day with people you love.

As I write this, we've just had a fresh dusting of snow and the kids are enjoying the chance to ride the snowmobile before returning to school on Wednesday. My son Connor has a friend from Colombia visiting who has never had the opportunity to snowmobile before. I hope Felipé is enjoying his time and Connor isn't scaring him too badly.

Congratulations to our Uncle Harold who was wed to his partner Damien in Whistler, B.C. over the holidays. They were actually married while aboard a lift going up the mountain! Harold and Damien reside in Arizona.

More exciting news to report from the other side of the globe! My brother-in-law, Rorey, was married on Dec. 24, 2010 to his beautiful fiancé, Jessica. The wedding was held in the Philippines where Jessica is from. They are currently residing there but are making plans to come home where we will celebrate their marriage Canadian style!

Congratulations to the Hoeg family as we welcome these two new family members!

Did everyone hear about the contest being put forth from the Southampton post office? They are looking for our own pictoral cancel stamp to use for canceling postage as it comes through. Most communities have their very own stamp depicting something they are known for, but Southampton has never had its own. Until now. The contest runs until Jan. 31 and they are looking for a simple sketch about the size of a toonie that depicts just why Southampton is so special. Carissa is eagerly awaiting your entries at the post office.

Congratulations to Eileen Canning, who won the Christmas basket draw from the post office!

That's all the news I have to share this week. Enjoy the winter weather that's finally here. Be careful shoveling the heavy stuff. Remember to lift from the knees!
