Council passes motion to sell police station for $2

Breakfast at Brittney’s came closer to becoming a reality after town council passed a motion yesterday to sell the former police station to Jeff Bembridge for $2. 

AMHERST – It’s official.

The Town of Amherst council met at the old town hall yesterday and passed a motion authorizing council to enter an agreement for the former Amherst police station at 45 Victoria Street to be sold to J.E. Bembridge Enterprises for $2.

The motion says in part “…Council authorizes the Mayor and CAO to execute a deed of conveyance transferring ownership of the property to J.E. Bembridge Enterprises Limited contingent on the purchaser satisfying their obligations contained within Section 6 of the Agreement of Purchase of Sale.”

Four proposals were submitted by from four different parties interested in developing the property during a special meeting on Oct. 31.

Council accepted the Bembridge proposal because they plan to develop the property immediately.

Conditions of the sale include that, “the purchaser will commence work on clean up and renovations of the building immediately after the sale is complete.”

In a previous interview with the Amherst Daily News, Jeff Bembridge, who owns Duncan’s Pub, said, "I'm looking forward to doing something with the building as soon as we can.”

During the same interview Bembridge said he plans to put a new restaurant in the building. Breakfast at Brittany's, named for his stepdaughter, will be open from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. and will feature affordable breakfast specials as well as menu items like Belgian waffles and eggs benedict.

    Who owns the property next door, the one with the big hole in the ground? Are there any stipulations attached in the event the business is not operational within the specified time frame?

    The restaurant is going to create jobs, bring people downtown, and bring in tax revenue for the town all within a short time frame, did the other proposals offer this???

    Well Hellz...if it walks like a duck, quacks like a duck, has webbed feet and flies south each fall it's probably a duck!!! This is not crying is what it is.Lets talk about Jeff for an second...there is no doubt he is a good hard working business man who is working in his best interests and I support him very frequently at my expense. However we can only hope that our council we elect are doing the same for us taxpayers. Someone may correct me if they feel the need but something tells me Amherst has a rough population of about 10K and lets assume 70% of them are taxppayers (7000).Accepting $2 for land that has a known value of 50K does not sound like good financial decision making. My tax share of that $2 deal would be considerably less than 1 cent whereas a $50K value makes my share over $7. Anytime the council gives anyone something out of my pocket I have a say and so does Sparky. I will continue to support Jeff but I like to get something for my money but thats definately not the case here!!

      You never got anything for your money eh. Well let me see. The taxpayers got a really good settlement for the building, and now the council has saved you the tax payer the very high price tag of demolition and site remediation by accepting $2 for the property to a local developer. By doing this, the tax payer is no longer on the hook for the property. And an what has become and eyesore downtown will soon be cleaned up and be a productive part of town again. While you can slice it anyway you choose the town came out very good on this. So maybe you should say thank you. Mr. Bembrigde has helped a lot of people in town including other small businesses and he will continue to do so, and I and a lot of others wish him all the best and congratulate him on having the fortitude to actually do things that better himself and his town.

      Thank you Fuzzy, you may have explained my thoughts a little better. I have no ill will or hard feelings against Mr. Bembridge, and hope that he is very successful. My issue is with council's decision to sell the property for $50k.

    I can't get over the negativity....he is an entrepreneur...he put forth a proposal that based on the criteria beat out the other offers. Most are pissed off because they are too lazy or incompetent to try such a thing....people hate seeing others succeed. Yes he got a great deal, prime location; hopefully he does well with this endeavor. At least he is creating wealth. Most of us in this town work for government or a company that at the very least receives rebates or contracts from the government! Disclaimer - I do not know Mr. Bembridge personally but I wish him luck.

    Gotta love the attitude in this town. Someone steps up wanting to develop something & people are already crying foul. References made to this being a shady deal? You're probably the same person that voted George Baker back into council...can you say conflict of interest? I hope Jeff does well with this venture, at least he's willing to invest in a town that seems to not be too supportive of anything new. Big business investing in Amherst? Man we can't even support our own small ones....smh

    Just giving away equity is never a smart idea. Then people will wonder why big business will not invest in Amherst.

    Even if this is all above board, the visuals of this whole deal are shady. Mr. Bembridge should have had to pay at least what the competing bids were. This looks like a shining example of the good old boys club. Congratulations to Mr. Bembridge, and hopefully he does well with his venture. Unfortunately, the taxpayers of Amherst seem to get the short end of the stick on this deal. IMO
